Today we follow Jesus into the ministry. James and John are asking for great honor to serve on the left and right hand when Jesus comes into his kingdom. Jesus shows them great humility as an example to us all as well when he asks them what can I do for you. As usual Jesus is the example of love as the disciples look out for themselves.

Whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be slave.

– Mark 30:43-44

Jesus teaches them that service creates honor. Jesus mission was to unite people with God. What has been broken by sin he worked to fix by His merits. We now are given the same mission. We seek the broken rather than our own position.

For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.
